The featured drawing is of one of my students Keith Farrell performing the Shoto Budo Kata Form called "Enpi". In this case the medium is charcoal. I have known and trained with Keith since he was a young boy and since his hair was crew cut.
Martial arts images are traditionally illustrated in text books as a collection of static poses from which the reader will endeavour to glean the purpose and technical application of the illustrated technique. For me there is great interest in seeing and studying the movement of body and technique in real practise and frequently realising how, even when effectively applied, the postures and positions differ greatly from those in text books.
A selection of other previously featured drawings can be seen in the gallery section of this site.
